what I wore - spring style (challenge week 3)

Wednesday, April 29, 2015

First - excited to announce that Darcy Lynn was the big winner of the $130 Nordstrom gift card! Don't be too disappointed, I foresee more giveaways in the near future!

Now, onto the style challenge! Hopefully you've been around long enough to see my maternity interpretations of week 1 and week 2... week 3 means we're wrapping up, but I'll be posting next week with a recap and sharing some of my favs!

Here's how I've been dressing the bump this past week:

Wednesday

The stripe dress again. I'm kinda loving this dress. Still chilly here so needing the leggings (plus, my legs are a ghostly shade of white) but making it work! The pop of color with the scarf and shoes definitely adds some 'spring' to the outfit!

Friday

I feel kinda 'meh' about this and from what I recall, I was uber tired this day - can you tell?! ha

Saturday

YIKES, camo leggings!! I bought these badboys for the challenge but have been too chicken to wear them. Went pretty casual with the rubber boots for daytime running around.

Clearly I warmed up to the camo leggings. Switched up the shoes and kept the leggings for date night! Added some red lips and good to go!

Sunday

Again, super tired this day (thank you sunglasses for helping me hide my tired eyes) so went for comfy/casual. I was really unsure about this outfit and almost changed before heading out for the day but was too tired to figure something else out. I think it works, no?

Monday

Had a meeting so wore the blazer which quite obviously is not doing up anytime soon. I'm still in love with the pink pants, they make me happy.

Tuesday

Maxi skirts = socially acceptable pjs. This outfit is a total win in my books, I felt cute but was more than comfy all day (though that nearly resulted in a nap at my desk so be forewarned).

Make sure you check out my fellow style challengers below to check out their non-maternity versions of the outfits this past week!

We'd love for you to linkup with us and share what you've been wearing.

Potato, leek and bacon soup

Saturday, April 25, 2015

I received a bundle of leeks in my organic produce box this week and had no clue what to do with it. I have never cooked a leek in my life. I scoured the internet looking at different recipes and adapted more than a couple to come up with my own (I have issues following recipes to the letter, it just doesn't happen). My goal was to keep it easy and delicious and there's no doubt I succeeded. This soup was a HIT! Enjoy!

Potato, Leek and Bacon Soup

Ingredients:

8-10 potatoes
3 leeks
6 cups chicken broth
1/2 pound of bacon
1.5 cups of whole milk
1.5 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1.5 cups water (optional)

Directions:

  1. Peel and cut potatoes. In a large stockpot, bring potatoes and broth to a boil. Continue to cook until potatoes are tender.
  2. Cup up bacon (I use scissors and cut in 1 inch strips) and place in deep drying pan on medium heat. Cook until evenly brown. Remove bacon but leave grease in pan.

  3. Clean and cut leeks. **leeks are notorious for being full of dirt - watch this video for a how-to for leek-prep**
  4. Saute the leeks in the frying pan with the reserved bacon grease (for 8-10 min on medium heat).

  5. Once potatoes are tender, stir in fried leeks, milk and bacon. Turn off heat and let soup begin to cool. Stir in shredded cheese (I wait until the soup has been cooling for about 15 min, so the cheese doesn't break down).

  6. Decision time: if you like chunky soup, use a potato masher until soup is desired consistency. If you like creamy soup, grab a hand blender and puree away! NOTE: I found the soup SUPER thick at this point so I added 1.5 cups of water while pureeing (this is optional but it didn't impact the flavor in the slightest).

  7. ENJOY!!

if you want to be real fancy-like, you can top with left over chopped leeks (I forgot to save any), shredded cheese, bacon (which I also forgot to save for picture-taking purposes) and a dollop of sour cream. YUM!!

I should add - this dish was toddler approved!!! :)

what I wore - spring style (challenge week 2) and GIVEAWAY!

The Spring Style Challenge is in full swing!

I have been dutifully making sure I take a pic every day (as you will see, some much better quality than others) so you've got a FULL week's worth of outfits, maternity style!

Wednesday

still rocking the denim vest care of Joe Fresh last year, maternity just means I can't do it up, but who does up a jean jacket anyways?

Thursday

I obviously needed a maternity chambray shirt and the floral leggings were too comfortable and cute not to come home with me.

Friday

More colored pants! I'm LOVING the hot pink though, so fun. I might actually miss these when the belly is gone.

Saturday

Oh cobalt blue, how I love you!

Sunday

Busting out the maxi, sized up in a non-maternity dress from Old Navy (for under $20 I might add) and LOVE it! Another denim jacket I can't do up lol

Me and my princess (ready for her Frozen birthday party). She was WAY too excited to sit still and pose for a picture with mom.

Monday

Clearly, I should have opted for sunglasses BUT if you ignore my face, you can focus on the super pretty scarf I scored at Forever21 for $12.

Tuesday

Comfort all the way... a tired, pregnant, working-mom's dream outfit!

There you have it!!! This challenge is really helping me have fun dressing up the bump!

My top 3 looks - GIVEAWAY!

Friday, April 17, 2015

I have spent a chunk of the last year attempting to somehow find/create/define my sense of style. I have relied heavily on Alison's Style Challenges for inspiration but am realizing, that no matter what the recommendations, we always put our own 'spin' on things.

There are some things we are comfortable trying and some we aren't. Some things we try and love, some we try and don't like so much (but at least we tried).

This weeks linkup is about 3 looks I love that you should try. I'm going to share 3 looks I've tried over the past year that have found a permanent home in my style repertoire.

Top 3 Looks (that I've tried AND stuck with)

White

White freaks me out. White pants, white shirts... white clothing in general. I previously wrote a blog post devoted to my fear of white pants. Here's the problem: I LOVE the look of white on everyone else but I'm constantly afraid of spillage/sitting in something gross etc. Having said all that, I've tried to be more welcoming to white in the past year (but you had better believe I'm always carrying a tide-to-go) and continue to add white pieces to my wardrobe (though, in the interest of full disclosure: I couldn't bring myself to buy white maternity jeans - I can only go so far people!).

Leopard Print

Having never been a huge fan of animal print, this was a stretch for me initially. I bought my first pair of leopard print flats, with hesitation, during last years Spring Style Challenge. I haven't looked back. I have since added a leopard print scarf and a second pair or leopard print flats (the first pair got so much use, I figured I could use a back-up). Needless to say, I have learned to love leopard print and it's found a home in my closet.

Colored Pants

By far my biggest fashion leap. Historically, I like to stick with denim or black pants and I haven't really deviated much from that, until last year. I started with a pair of red pants, then added some prints and more color. I've learned that color and prints work on the bottom (and can be lots of fun), you just need to shop around for fit, material and color that work with your body type (read: doesn't show lumps and bumps). I am happy to report I have even carried this look into my maternity wardrobe!

Spring Style Challenge - round 2!

Once again, I'm participating in the Spring Style Challenge.

As excited as I normally am for these challenges, I was a little apprehensive about having to put a maternity spin on everything. Thankfully, with a few substitutions, I think I am going to be able to make all of the pieces work with my growing belly AND I have a super fun new spring maternity wardrobe to share :)

Similar to previous challenges, I will be linking up with other challenge participants on Wednesdays during the challenge so you can see how we've all interpreted our outfits! AND we welcome you to link up your outfit(s) from the past week as well.

Here goes...

Monday

Jacket: Joe Fresh (last year), t-shirt: Thyme Maternity, pants: Motherhood Maternity, shoes: Franco Sarto (c/o the Bay)

Tuesday

Jacket: gap (old - like really old), dress: Joe Fresh, shoes: old, sunglasses: Ray Ban

Spring 2015 purses

Monday, April 13, 2015

I've been struggling with bag-decisions this spring. So, like a good blogger, I decided to do my research (you're welcome!). Naturally, Mr. B happened upon me while doing said research and the first thing he said was 'get off that website'. I obviously had to explain that I was doing 'research' and that it was all for the greater good. I'm not sure he was convinced...

Anyways, this spring the tote, bucket and crossbody style bags seem to be the most popular.

Thankfully, there are also a plethora of options for a variety of price-points AND the color choices are A-MAZING!!!

Here are some of my favs:

Tote

The tote is my favorite style of bag. Likely because I tend to carry around way too much stuff. I need to be able to fit my wallet, water, phone, lipstuff, notebook (just in case) and some stuff for the little miss. Most totes accommodate my collection of 'purse necessities'.

Bucket

The bucket-style bag is everywhere. I am not completely sold on it for myself but I have seen some people pull it off well. A plus: like the tote, lots of room!

Crossbody

This is your go-to bag when you don't want sore shoulders from carrying around everything you own. Perfect for a long day shopping, day at the zoo with the kiddos or concert. You can keep all you need close with little effort!

Fan bags

Alright, you got me, this category wasn't found on any spring 2015 accessory list BUT that doesn't mean it's not super awesome.

Did you know Dooney and Bourke have an MLB line??? Specifically, Toronto Blue Jays?? (for other baseball fans, they have other teams too).

They are made of real leather and are a-freaking-dorable! I have already advised Mr. B, that should he struggle for future gift ideas, he should feel free to refer back here :)

Here are two of my favs:

What is your must-have purse this season???? Do share because I'm not quite decided yet :) (links appreciated!)
