this city I call home

Barrie, Ontario, Canada

Today's post is about the city I live in: Barrie, Ontario, Canada.

I have lived in Barrie since I was 16 years old. I left a few times for school but apparently I just can't stay away. Now, I'm all grown up (whatever that means) and have decided to settle down and start a family here.

About Barrie:
Barrie is about an hour north of more well-known Toronto, Ontario. 143,634 people live in Barrie (as of 2014, according to this source), a city that is probably most well known for it's beautiful downtown which is centered around the waterfront of Kempenfelt Bay.

Why I live here and love it:

Location - Barrie has a perfect location in Ontario, all of the best places are within driving distance. Toronto is only an hour south, beautiful 'cottage country' is only an hour or two north (depending on where exactly you're headed) and Niagara Falls (and wine region) is only 2 or so hours away as well! PLUS, there are a number of US borders within driving distance (shopping!!). It's also within driving distance to Montreal (although, I have to admit, I've never actually been there yet), Ottawa (our nation's capital and another beautiful and fun city) and probably lots of other awesome places I'm missing.

Weather - I LOVE getting to experience all four seasons. Fall in Ontario is beautiful- changing leaves, cool crisp air. Winter is full of snow and cold and longer than I'd like, but it's definitely an experience. Spring, usually arrives late, but brings sunshine and the hope of summer. Summer is my favorite and it's usually pretty hot and humid around here. If you're wondering what our current weather is like click HERE.

Food - it could be the pregnancy talking, but I LOVE food and I must admit Barrie has some pretty awesome places to eat. Yes, we've got our fair share of chain restaurants BUT there are also a ton of locally owned places that are absolutely AMAZING! Some of my favorites (in case you happen to visit) are: The Crazy Fox, The North and Made in Mexico (I have lots more places but that could be a whole other post!). If you're planning a trip this way (or just want to read more about local eateries) click HERE to explore what food experiences Barrie has to offer.

Waterfront - Barrie truly has a beautiful waterfront. It's the city's best attribute as far as I'm concerned and so many of the great things about Barrie are centered around the water, including Barrie's downtown (think restaurants, pubs, bars etc).
A trail runs along the water's edge so you can run, rollerblade, bike or take a leisurely walk from one side of the bay, to the other, and back. There are parks, beaches and even an ice cream hut along the way and it's a very busy place during the summer.
There are festivals almost EVERY weekend throughout the summer. We always go to Ribfest which is essentially all about ribs and all things BBQ. Not to mention the craft beer! Then there's Kempenfest - a massive blend of unique, artsy-crafty vendors where you can seriously pick up the coolest stuff. You name it, you can find it at Kempenfest. Plus it's so fun to walk along the waterfront AND shop!

I went on the Barrie Tourism Website and under the 'things to do' section there is a HUGE menu of things to do in and around Barrie. The list speaks for itself! And, if I'm being honest, I still have to actually do a lot of the things on the list. There are so many things to see and do that I honestly I no clue about! Looks like there are going to be some 'tourist in my own city' days in our family's future!

Here's a peek at some of the 'things to do' that Barrie has to offer (list c/o Tourism Barrie):

  10. That, my friend, is quite the comprehensive list of things to do when in Barrie. Wow, looks like it has a little bit of everything. Love that adorable mini-you at the waterfront park. I went to Montreal for the World's Fair in 1967 and loved my time there. My parents even rented an apartment for our stay. I pretended I was Canadian.
