2014 in review and some goals for 2015

Wednesday, December 31, 2014

these posts kinda scare me because I'm always worried I'll forget something significant. Wish me luck. (picture HEAVY!)

The year started with a whirlwind. We moved into our new home and started renovations. I participated in the moving much more than in the renovating piece. There's still lots we want to do, but so far, we're pretty happy with how things are coming along :)

BEFORE

AFTER

Note: I do NOT recommend attempting living without a kitchen for 2 months while trying to parent a 9 month old. It's NOT pretty or fun. At all. You WILL question your sanity. Every. Day. You've been warned.

In the midst of moving and renos we took a vacation to Mexico with my bro and his girlfriend. The trip was scheduled prior to us buying the house but turned out to be a much needed break to the kitchen-free living.

Surprisingly, travelling with a 10 month old went over fairly well. Props to mini-me for that one.

My step-brother got married in Feb and mini-me was one of the flower girls!! She also just happened to get horribly ill the night before the wedding resulting in our first family trip to the ER. Thankfully, she pulled it together in time for the big show!

I started this blog in March 2014 in hopes of quickly reforming my yoga pants wearing ways. I never imagined meeting so many amazing bloggers from all over the world, some I'm very happy to consider friends.

In April 2014, our sweet mini-me turned 1 and it was also the same month I returned to work following my year maternity leave.

May 2014 brought my first weekend away from my little monkey. It was an amazing and much needed girls weekend with one of my bestest friends.

The summer kind of flew by. I'm sure a lot happened but it's all kind of a blur now.

I entered the Face of Pink Ink contest... and WON! I have intended to write lots about this but never got around to it. Long and short of it is this: Pink Ink is run by Jen and Rita. They are style and image consultants. They do hair, makeup, workshops, help women with self-esteem, and TONS more (I'm not doing them justice, check out their website for more details). They also have their own makeup line which I'm kind of obsessed with. ANYWAYS, each year they have a contest which my girlfriend and I entered because we wanted to make a girl's day/night of it. We had our hair and makeup done and a mini-photoshoots. It was a super fun day and we then had a wonderfully fun night out(albeit the next day wasn't super enjoyable if ya know what I mean).

Fast-forward a few months later, and guess who is one of the new faces of Pink Ink for the year?! Me!! It's been a fun ride - fashion shows, photoshoots, and being thrown totally out of my comfort zone. I've also met some super amazing ladies and have participated in things I would have otherwise not been a part of. Yay for branching out.

I discovered Jamberry. I parent, work full-time and just generally have tons on my plate BUT once I tried Jamberry I was hooked. It's my new little side business and I hope to share it with even more people in 2015! PLUS, I have pretty nails ALL the time. Love it.

My brother got engaged!! I also just happen to LOVE his fiance, so bonus for me :) Oh AND they asked mini-me AND I to be in the wedding!!! Stay turned - the date is set for Aug 2015!

What else?!

Mr. B and I had our first nights away from mini-me. One for a wedding and one just a night away. Both were amazing and mini-me was a little angel for grandma (thank goodness). We NEED to do this more next year!

Mini-me has gone through so many stages and changes. Sleeping, not sleeping, sleeping again. Crawling to walking to running and dancing and singing. She's pretty much talking full sentences at 20 months and just tonight pooped in the potty for the 2nd time. She's literally changing by the day. She's also turning into the sweetest and most amazing little girl.

I'm SURE I'm forgetting something, someone.... important.

I do have a few regrets. There are some friends I don't feel like I saw enough of, some people I didn't keep in good enough touch with. I may have to add this to my 'to-do' for next year.

I fell, HARD, off the workout wagon in the late fall... the results of which are starting to show.

Alright, the fun part... the RESOLUTIONS!!!!!!!!!

I have put a lot of thought into this, because I don't want to do the same thing I do EVERY year. Say a bunch of stuff and then forget about it tomorrow. I'm looking at it more as Goal Setting for the year.

  • write more meaningful blog posts - I wrote about this in my slump post, but for real, I want to write more stuff that means more to me. Not writing just to fill up posts. I'm open to ideas too so if there's something you're dying to read about, let me know!
  • do yoga - I used to do a lot of yoga but that's another wagon I've fallen hard off of. I also remember when I was doing lots of yoga, I felt much calmer and happier. I think I need yoga back in my life this year.
  • cook/bake more - being so busy means finding short cuts. I try and prep food stuff for the  week on the weekends (and when I don't, we end up eating takeout or really quick, low prep meals). Here's the thing, as much as I need food prep to be fast and efficient, I truly miss spending time in the kitchen. The only thing I need is someone to clean up my mess... any takers?
  • schedule more dates - with my husband, with my friends, with my daughter. I want to be more deliberate about the time I spend with people. Mr. B and I SERIOUSLY do not see each other, alone, enough. Same with some of my friends... thankfully, I have amazing friends so no matter how long the space is between our 'dates', it's like we just  hung out yesterday. Regardless, I need more dates with the people who are important to me, it just makes me happy.
  • read a book - one of my blog friends, Carrie, recently posted about the books she's read over the last year. I was rather embarrassed to think about the books I've read. Ummmmmmmmm I think I might have read one. ONE! I like reading, there are books I want to read but I just never do it. I want to read a book. I'm not setting my sights too high on this one, because I am busy BUT, so help me, I will read at least one flipping book this year JUST FOR ME!
  • I'd love to get back to the gym, be healthier, eat better, laugh and love more and a ton of other things. I hope to do those too but I'll keep this short for now (plus, how much failure do I really want to set myself up for? lol).
I'll even attempt to check back on my goals throughout the year in an attempt to keep myself somewhat accountable. You with me?

Do you have any resolutions or goals for 2015???? I'd love for you to share!!!

Generally, it's been a pretty awesome year. It's gone by too fast but I'm looking forward for whatever 2015 has in store for us. Stay tuned...

Wishing you ALL of the very best this upcoming year!

Jam up your New Years

Christmas is quickly approaching with New Years quick on it's heels.

Soooooo here are some ideas to jam up your New Years (with Jamberry nail wraps of course). PLUS, they're just pretty outfits in general, jams or no jams :) And, I don't know about you, but I always like dressy outfit inspirations!!

frumpy mommy's slump

Tuesday, December 30, 2014

Alright, I need to just put this out there: I've been in a slump. More specifically, a blogging slump.

This 'slump' will come as no surprise if you're a regular reader (which, if you've continued to read even during this 'slump' then I REALLY love you :) If you're not a regular, don't worry, you likely haven't missed much lately.

I started this blog with high hopes and ambitions. Then life happened. Mini-me decided sleep was for the birds and our family's collective health seemed to simultaneously took a nosedive. The content in my blog followed suit.

It's not like I was previously writing award-winning material, let's be serious, but still, I had more time and energy and I REALLY loved blogging. It was my outlet.

What happened when things got crazy was that this place became a chore. I was trying so hard just to do the bare minimum. It felt shitty but it felt better than doing nothing.

Thankfully, some linkups kept me somewhat motivated, or at least contributing once a week... BUT I know I haven't been writing about what I want to write about. I haven't been writing what I'm passionate about. Part of the reason for this is really that there is only so many times I can complain about lack of sleep and feeling like crap before people become disinterested. Although, in hindsight, I've been doing that anyways, haven't I?! Oops.

Alright, where am I going with this? I don't know. I just want to put it out there, that whole transparency thing.

Also, (and I really hope I'm not jinxing anything here because so help me, I do still really NEED sleep) mini-has likened to sleeping again (if only this would last) so my energy levels are up a little. I'm also hoping that sickness is done with us for now (ya, right, I know).

Here's where I make promises. Except, I'm not offering anything grandiose. I can't commit to writing 3 times a week, because shit life happens and that's just the way it goes. What I will tell you, is what I'd like to do and that is write with more passion and creativity. Sure, I love fashion and clothes, but I've just been posting pics not providing much narrative or insight. BORING. So I'll still write about whatever I feel like and whenever I feel like it, I'll just try and be more intentional about it. K?

Lastly, THANK YOU, for sticking around... the best is yet to come my friends:)

my ever-changing love for the holidays

Wednesday, December 24, 2014

I have always loved the holidays. There's just something inherently nostalgic about the entire Christmas season.

I can't honestly say that it was never about the presents, I'm sure, when I was a child, that one of the main reasons I adored Christmas had to do with presents. It was also about the magic. It just seems like a magical time of the year.

Looking back, I remember waking up in the wee early hours of the morning and waiting until we were allowed to go downstairs. I remember seeing all of the gifts laid out under the tree and feeling so grateful. It was exciting and fun and oh so magical.

1983

As a teen and young adult, my reasons for loving the holidays changed. I loved spending time with family and friends, getting together for delicious food and tasty drinks, and just enjoying some much needed time with the people who meant the most to me. Sure, there were still presents, but I always liked getting other people gifts more then receiving them. Anything I received was an added bonus!

Things have changed again. My reasons for loving Christmas have evolved yet again. Mini-me. It's so amazing to see the holidays through her eyes. To watch her stand and marvel at our Christmas tree. To hear her recite Christmas carols and request holiday movies (by the end of this season, I will know every word to the Frosty the Snowman movie). She is still so small, only 20 months (wow, that went by fast) but yet she already understands that this is a special time of the year. She just senses something going on and the excitement from her is palpable.

if you're wondering what she's doing, she's singing songs to the Christmas tree, obviously!

No, it's not all about the presents, but I cannot tell you how beyond excited I am to see her face Christmas morning?! To watch her delight as she tears away the paper on her presents!

And then, to dress her up and take her to visit all of our family!!!

It's the perfect excuse to see all of our family in a short window of time and while it sometimes feels like a whirlwind, it's a wonderful one.

I have to say, that already, this is my favorite Christmas of them all. The holidays with Mini-me just make it that much more special.

It has been crazy and busy lately but I am going to make a point to slow down over the next few days and soak it all in. I want to enjoy every gift opened, every laugh shared, and every yummy bite eaten! I hope you're all able to do the same, whatever Christmas-loving stage you're at!

Have a VERY VERY magical and special and merry Christmas from our family to yours.

what I wore - winter style challenge (week #3)

Monday, December 22, 2014

Yes, this is a day early... it's not Wednesday yet,to don't panic.

It just makes more sense to post before Christmas Eve. Tomorrow the fun begins and it's quite likely I won't have time to blog for a bit, because you know, I'm usually full of free-time where I spend time writing quality blog entries. Oh wait, no, that's not me lately. I keep saying this BUT I will get back there. One day. In time. Ever.

Confession time: I get all excited for the Style Challenges and then am super craptastic about following along. I had fallen out of the routine of having Mr. B take a pic of me in the morning and it is kinda hard to get back at it. Plus, I'm off this week, so Mr. B is out of the house much before I'm ready to go. *sigh*

here's what I've managed to capture:

Okay, I actually thought I took more than 3 pictures but apparently I was wrong. Oops.

Then there's the whole fact that none of these outfits are actually ON challenge. Well, technically, the first one is, minus the scarf. Regardless, I'm still enjoying the daily emails telling me what to wear, whether I listen or not! Plus, I love seeing everyone's outfits and it gives me ideas for later.

Middle pic was my 'hosting' outfit (cooking = tanktop because needed to be cool!). I dyed my hair a little darker... it's been a long time since I haven't been super blonde. Still not sure what I think of it.

OH and I did get some new holiday jams on ;)

Christmas home tour... kinda sorta

Friday, December 19, 2014

I have a confession. This post is supposed to be a holiday home tour. Well. First of all, my house is a mess right now. Second, we do have holiday decorations up, but for the most part it's cheesy stuff.

I was hoping this year to have the time/energy to buy some new, classy-like, decorations and really do our house up nice. And then I realized Christmas is next week. Priorities have shifted to ensuring all the things I need to buy are bought, prezzies are wrapped, food is in the fridge etc etc.

We did manage to put up a tree! YAY! It's fake (I argued for a real one and lost) and it's not coordinated by any stretch, but it's ours and mini-me loves it. She loves it so much so, in fact, that she started singing songs to it right after we finished decorating.

This is a rather shameful holiday decoration post but I PROMISE some the other ladies will more than make up for my decorating failure. Make sure you check them out, I know I will be making notes because I could clearly use the help!!!

My house may not be decorated to the nines and I may not be ready for the holidays that are rapidly arriving BUT it'll still be an amazing, fun-filled holiday in our house! How could it not be with a toddler who is this cute and excited?!

what I wore - Winter Style Challenge (week 2)

Wednesday, December 17, 2014

I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaack and wearing stuff. Again.

I didn't buy a lot this go around. Actually, I didn't buy anything I don't think... huh?  That can't be right. My brain is a little foggy these days (I say these days in an attempt to pretend that's not just 'the way it is' now) so I have a hard time recalling if I actually made purchases in preparation for this Style Challenge.

There were a few items I didn't buy/find including a faux fur scarf. Truth be told, I love the way they look on everyone else and if I happen to actually see one in stores I may pick it up but I'm not sure it suits me. What do you think?? Yay or nay to the faux fur??

You've probably seen most of these outfits BUT see outfit #2??? Ya, that's right, I brought out the denim vest from the spring challenge!!! I felt a wee-bit 80s rockstar that day, but I kinda liked it.

Big sweaters, puffy vests and scarves OH MY! I'm clearly not high fashion by any stretch, but this comfy casual is definitely my thing. Sure, I like dressing up but 'tis the season to be warm and comfy.

OH and here's the holiday jamicure I'm sporting this week!!

for more info check our my Jamberry Page and my Jamberry Facebook Page

I'm linking up with some of my fellow challengers and I promise we will all have very different looks this past week - if you check them out, you may even see some of those faux fur scarves I'm talking about (and then you can help me decide if I need one).

style me secret santa!

Sunday, December 14, 2014

Happy Holidays!!!!

I literally cannot believe how quickly this holiday season came. Seriously, wasn't it summer like yesterday?

Anyways, it wouldn't be the holidays without a secret santa or two!! The Style Me Bloggers started linking up every other Friday a few weeks ago. In case you missed it, we're a bunch of  bloggers who met through the Style Me Challenges.

A few of us decided it would be fun to do a secret santa and reveal our prezzies today!

here are my amazing gifts:

I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The wonderful Sheila nailed it!!! A super fun pair of sunglasses AND a beautiful red scarf. Oddly enough, with all of the scarves I own, I do not have a red one. It's like she knew!! She even sent it in a gift bad.

Confession: I'm feeling guilty about my gift, which was sent directly through the site I purchased from. FAIL.

THANK YOU sooooo much Sheila, I love my gifts!

Alright, here's the other part of this post.... we Style Me Bloggers thought it might be a nice idea to take this opportunity to say a big THANK YOU to Alison and her Style Me Pretty Challenges!

I previously wrote a letter to my fellow Style Challengers and Alison HERE so this might get a little repetitive for those who have been around a while :)

Dear Alison:

I have likely said all of this before and I know, without a doubt, that many women have echoed my sentiments regarding your blog and specifically your Style Challenges. THANK YOU, from the bottom of my now semi-well-dressed heart, thank you.

I started this blogging journey upon my return to work after a year maternity leave. I was feeling the need to bring my style up a notch. To no longer feel like I always looked gym-ready. I know you can related to this because I know this is why you started blogging. Thankfully, early on in my blogging journey, I found your blog. Then, as if by fate, you soon started your style challenges. I was fortunate to be taking part of something amazing right from the beginning.

The shopping lists and the emailed daily outfits have been a life saver since the Spring. You've helped me get ready in the mornings and, most importantly, you've helped me feel good about myself on days where I wanted to do nothing more than throw on sweats and put my hair in a pony tail.

I always say it's about what's on the inside and I will teach my daughter this as well. BUT, I cannot stress the significance of feeling good about the way you look. It's not about being or looking like a supermodel, it's about feeling good in your own skin. It's about dressing for your body type and feeling confident leaving the house. You have helped me with that, more times than I can count.

Then, there's the Facebook group. I will say thanks to you for this, but there are so many more thank yous owed. I know the lovely Bebe helps out a TON! And then, then there's all of the women who participate daily. The women ho take the time to post, 'like' and comment on all of the other pictures. The women who offer fashion advice to those seeking it, or share stories about their personal lives and the impact the challenges have had.

Alison, you've facilitated the building of not only confidence, but of a community of women who feel better about themselves and who take the time every single day to make other women feel better about themselves. It's a truly amazing thing and I'm so honored to be a part of it.

The Style Me Bloggers are just another example of something awesome you helped create! How cool is that?!

Here's where I confess, my participation has waned somewhat from the beginning. Life gets busy. Stuff happens. Even still, it brightens my morning to scroll through Facebook and see all the outfits, to read the thoughtful and sweet comments and to know, that whenever I can participate I have a whole community waiting for me.

thank you again, for this fun and awesome thing you've started. You've given us all such a wonderful gift!

top pieces in my wardrobe

Thursday, December 11, 2014

Friday top 5 is here again

Today I'm supposed to write about the top 5 pieces in my wardrobe. WHAT?! Do you know how hard it is to pick just 5 things I LOVE?! I'm going to just pick two things that come to me quick.

I'll be honest, my real reason for only picking 2 is because I really want to watch the series finale of Sons of Anarchy :) I know, I know. One day I will properly blog again. I promise.

Here's my top 2 from the past year:

1. Colorful pants - this is something that is was WAY out of my comfort zone prior to the spring. If it wasn't black or denim it wasn't going on my bottom. I have reformed my ways and I seriously love love love pants with color. The key is you have to find the right ones! Try try try until you find the right ones, you'll be happy you did :)

2. Scarves - scarves are my favorite! You can jazz up any outfit with a scarf. They're fun, can be inexpensive and are super easy to just throw on. They're also something I seriously can't have enough of. I always want more.

Okay, Sons of Anarchy time for me!!!!

Wait, I do really want to know what your own favorite pieces are from your own wardrobes!! So comment below and tell my your fav pieces!

Oh and it's your last chance to get in on the Coupon Book GIVEAWAY!!! Draw is the 15th!!

what I wore - Winter Challenge (week 1)

Wednesday, December 10, 2014

Let's try this again... I attempted to write this last night but apparently my internet hates me. Figures.

We're at it again, another style challenge is underway! The Winter Style Challenge is up and running and we all started receiving our daily outfits on Sunday night (woohoo).

As you know from my incessant complaining, everyone in our house (including yours truly) hasn't been well this season (ew) so having someone dress me every day is a serious time and energy saver. Right now, the less I have to use my brain in the morning, the better.

It's early in the challenge, so you're only going to see the first two outfits (and my little photo-bomber) BUT stay tuned in the new few weeks they'll be LOTS more to inspire your winter wardrobes!!!

Make sure you check out the other challengers below to see how they've interpreted the outfits AND we'd love for you to link up with us each Wednesday :) Happy styling...

I'm still loving my fuzzy leopard scarf. I'm technically supposed to be wearing a fur scarf but have yet to purchase one.

Apparently mini-me REALLY wants to have her picture taken in the morning - this is her 'cheese' face lol

EDIT: this entry was originally titled "what I work" which is now forever embedded in the link for the post. I need a nap and to edit  prior to posting.

In addition to the lovely ladies below, I'm also linking up with Get Your Pretty On, The Pleated Poppy, Because Shanna Said So
