crushing on some AMAZING accessories

Tuesday, September 30, 2014

My journey out of frumpymommydom ' would not be without accessories.

Previous frumpy outfits failed to include accessories. Thankfully, I've finally learned that accessories are like icing on the cake (usually the best part).

Luckily for me (and you) I recently 'met' the lovely ladies at myfemmecrush via twitter. We started discussing a collaboration and as soon as I viewed their pieces I knew my answer was a resounding YES!

how cute is the pink packaging?? They had me at the heart stickers

So these lovely ladies let me pick out three beautiful pieces. They honestly didn't even ask for anything in return. BUT I loved the stuff so much that I really wanted to show and tell you about it.

myfemmecrush is a Canadian company, which, though not a prerequisite, is something I LOVE about them! (don't worry my worldly friends, they offer international shipping)

The pieces I received were VERY well made. They stood the test of a full work day and being tugged and poked and prodded by a toddler (that's impressive). I've lost many a poorly made bracelet care of mini-me.

Price: very affordable for unique pieces!

So here they are:

More exciting news: they JUST released their new fall collection tonight at 8pm and I guarantee you'll love so many of the pieces. Be one of the first to see it!!

I've got my sights set on the Black Widow Jeweled Necklace, the Bella Heart Bracelet and the Lola Triple Pearl Earrings (to name a few). I also love the scarves!!

Happy shopping!!

I've MOVED!

5 pics I've taken that make me smile

Friday, September 26, 2014

Okay, I'm SUPER late on this post... creating it at 8:30pm. I'm not the most organized or scheduled blogger but I'm usually a little more on the ball than this.

It has been a CRAZY week both personally and professionally. I'm finally sitting down, with a glass bottle of wine and relaxing.

This weeks linkup is 5 favorite pictures I've taken... I take A LOT of pics so the time it would take me to thoroughly go through all and find the BEST pics I've taken would be practically impossible (and beyond my brain capacity after this week).  I need to make it a little more specific for my own sanity (or lack thereof).

Fitting for this week, I'm going to go with 5 pics of mini-me that make me smile (that I've taken) - here's hoping they'll make you smile too!

Okay, if at least one of those didn't make you smile, you have no heart.
feel free to link up this week (apparently you can be late, like me!) and we'd love if you'd like up for future top 5s!

Please linkup below and make sure you visit the other ladies to see their top 5!

Fall Style Challenge time!!!!

Thursday, September 25, 2014

If you've been reading my blog for any length of time, it's certainly no secret that I've become addicted to the Style Challenges @ Get Your Pretty On.

Fall Style Challenge - Banner Image

To date, I've participated in ALL of the challenges  Alison has done (Spring, Summer  and Work Wear). I have yet to be disappointed. Click HERE to see all my Style Challenge-related entries

I probably sub jeans more than most, but these outfits are all care of the Spring Style Challenge

Since fall fashion is my fav, it's no surprise I'm unnaturally excited about the upcoming Fall Style Challenge AND I'd love for you all to come along for the ride!!

thanks to Alison, I've found a new love for pants with colors, print and maxi skirts! (And yes, those are white pants, that I said I'd never wear but they were a challenge item both Spring and Summer so I obliged)

Here's the deal:
  • you pay $24.99 (US dollars - for my Canadian friends)
  • Alison emails you a list of items that you find by either shopping your closet or buying new. I ALWAYS have many of the items on the list (think jeans, white t-shirt etc) but I also always end up with a few (or more than a few) new pieces.
  • after 10 days with your list, the fun really starts - you get an email EVERY night for 21 days telling you what to wear the next day.
Okay, now that you know the facts, let me tell you the rest. Clearly, since this is my 4th challenge in a row, I'm a very satisfied customer.

I love these challenges for a number of reasons:

You start building outfits instead of pieces. I've struggled in the past with seeing a great item on sale, or loving a certain trend but not knowing how to style it. I buy something, then have no idea how to wear it. In the style challenge, you'll literally get a number of ideas for each piece and you'll never wear the exact same outfit twice. Learning how to "style" clothes has been the biggest gain for me.

It takes the guesswork out of getting ready. If you're busy like me (and who isn't?) it's quite a challenge in the mornings to come up with a cute outfit while I'm chasing mini-me and have yet to consume caffeine. Problem solved with the Style Challenge. Even when I change pieces (she makes substitution suggests and you'll come up with some of your own depending on what you have/like to wear), I still always go to bed having some idea of what I'm wearing the following day.

COLOR. I used to wear primarily white, black brown and grey. BORING. Thanks to the Style Challenges I'm intentionally trying to find colors (seasonally appropriate, of course) to incorporate into my wardrobe AND I'm seriously loving it.

Gone will be the mornings of standing in a walk-in closet full of clothes staring blankly at said clothes and thinking "I have nothing to wear".

Print pants are at it again.

You'll be put out of your comfort zone. Yes, this is a good thing. There are definitely some items I wouldn't have thought to buy that have become staples in my wardrobe. For example: leopard flats, denim vest and print pants are all things I would NEVER have purchased on my own and now love and wear regularly.

Even if you don't feel it, you'll always look put together!

It saves money AND time (both things I don't have nearly enough of). I haven't done the research or calculated the specifics BUT my shopping has become more efficient and I have stopped buying things and never wearing them. No more items with tags getting lost in the Bermuda Triangle that is my closet.

It's FUN and makes you feel like a million bucks. I can't emphasize this one enough. You have the option of joining the Facebook Group (and make sure you do if you choose to participate). People share their takes on the outfits (and you'll be surprised how different they are) by posting 'selfies' and EVERY group I've been a part of has been full of amazing, beautiful and confidence-building women. You'll not only get compliments in the Facebook group, but people you run into (family, friends, coworkers) will start commenting on your outfits. If you're feeling you could use a confidence boost - sign up, you won't regret it!

Some looks from the Work Wear challenge, I definitely felt great at work this week!

So what are you waiting for???? Join me and a ton of other amazing ladies for the Fall Style Challenge

what I wore - more fall wear

Wednesday, September 24, 2014

Look at me posting without being involved in a current Style Challenge!!

It's going to be a quick one because, quite frankly, it's been a long week (and it's only Wednesday - well, technically Tuesday night but you know what I mean).

My work place is an office, rather casual, but I've been trying not to wear jeans unless it's Friday. It makes me at least feel more professional ;)

Here's some looks I've been managing to put together without direction in the last week (go me!)

if I look a little stunned, keep in mind, these pics are all pre-coffee!

See the necklace in pic #2??? My new rose gold chain necklace c/o the lovely ladies at myfemmecrush - stay tuned for a whole post on their awesome jewelry in the coming week!

I'm (clearly) still loving pants/jeans with color! This love/trend will definitely carry into fall. I'm confident I'll continue to love my red jeans and have added a burgundy pair to the mix!
And then there's my beloved print pants (thank you Old Navy) have remained in the rotation. I never thought I'd wear, let alone like, print pants!

What are your favorite fall fashions/trends/colors??? I need shopping ideas!!

Bonobos Fall 2014 Suit Collection (Men's Fashion)

Saturday, September 20, 2014

I was recently contacted by Bonobos to write a post to help launch their Fall 2014 Suit Collection. My initial thought was "too bad I'll never be able to get Mr. B to wear any of it". THEN I realized this was the perfect opportunity. I could peruse the fall collection and dream of what it might be like to dress a cooperative husband.

Perfect.

So, here it is, a sneak peek at the Bonobos Fall 2014 Suit Collection

Note: I did contemplate cropping Mr. B's head onto the model's bodies purely for my own amusement but then I thought that miught not be super appreciated by all the people whose hard work went into these pics. So, instead of Mr. B, you'll have to suffer with these hideous models. I'm mean like that.

I love the way this looks dressy but not super formal.
There really is just something about a man in a suit. Maybe the novelty would wear off if Mr. B wore suits regularly... then again, maybe not.

How great is this jacket? I love jackets in different patterns and textures and there seems to be a lot of that in the Fall Collection. I also think it helps make a suit look a little more casual and unique.

I'd LOVE to see Mr. B in something like this! In fact, with plaid shirt underneath and jeans, it might just be something I could get him into.

“Fit is the most important detail for a suit. Marry that with classic color options and quality fabric, and you have a great looking, versatile suit for every occasion,” says Dwight Fenton, Bonobos VP of Design.

Fenton’s simple suit tips to find the right fit:
• Fit starts with the shoulders: The jacket should grab your shoulders snuggly but not be overly tight. If the shoulders fit, pretty much anything else can be adjusted.
• Length matters: To determine the appropriate length, you should be able to cup the bottom of the suit with your arms by your side.
• Show some shirt: A flexible but general rule of thumb is to have a quarter-inch of your shirt cuff showing. If you’re wearing a heavier cuff, like a French cuff, you may want to show a little more.

Here are a few other pieces that I'm coveting from Bonobos for Mr. B:

I'm not sure why, but I love men in scarves. Unfortunately, Mr. B refuses to wear one. UGH.

I love this jacket and I actually think Mr. B would agree with me.

Another fav! I love that it's paired with jeans, that might be one way to get Mr. B into it!

And a few pieces I KNOW Mr. B would love (and actually pick out without my help/encouragement/insistence):

along with their entire line of sweatpants, hoodies and t-shirts...

I haven't purchased anything from Bonobos (yet) so I can't speak personally to the quality BUT I did do some online research and the reviews are overwhelmingly positive. I'm even more inclined to start holiday shopping for Mr. B now!

They also offer shipping to Canada from $15-$20 (YAY!)

So there you have it, some fall looks for the men in your life! Visit Bonobos.com to start shopping!

5 places I want to see before I die

Friday, September 19, 2014

The world is full of so many places and if I had an endless budget (I don't), I'd love to just travel all over. Sure, I'd have to work on a few of my fears: planes, spiders, bugs and sharks (among others) BUT I'm confident I could work through that or at least cope with it.

Here's 5 places I really want to go/see but remember... my REAL list of places I'd like to go is much much longer ;)

5 Places I want to see before I die:
  1. Canada's West/ West Coast - I've technically been 'out west' a few times. I used to spend summers in Edmonton when my dad lived there when I was younger. I even went on a camping trip with a friend and her family and camped around BC. My recollection of these travels is minimal and every time one of my friends posts a picture of the mountains or the beautiful coast, it confirms why this is my #1.

  2. New York City - Maybe it's my love of fashion or my previous obsession with everything Sex in the City or maybe it's because everyone I know that's been to New York City seems to develop a special place in their heart just for New York. Whatever the reason, I need to get there.

  3. Italy - It's no surprise I love wine. I also love food. Those two things alone make Italy a desirable destination for me. Then there's the whole history, the art and the architecture. I don't pretend to be a history buff by any stretch, but I like pretty stuff and sometimes I like to learn stuff ;)

  4. Germany - I just happened to be born in Germany so it only seems appropriate to go back. My dad was stationed there while my mom was pregnant so it's where I spent the first two years of my life. I'd love to go back and explore. PLUS, I also happen to enjoy beer and I hear it's kind of a big deal there!

  5. Greece - Well, who doesn't love Greek food?! Tatziki anyone? That's Greek, right? My REAL reason for wanting to go to Greece is purely for aesthetics. The pictures I've seen are absolutely stunning, how could I not want to go there?

Now you know some places I'd like to go... Where have you been that you'd recommend? Where do you feel you NEED to go some day???

what I wore - FALL!!

Wednesday, September 17, 2014

The Work Your Work Wear style challenge ended Friday. Thankfully, the style tips and blazers have stuck with me.

AND the weather has cooled significantly here. Most people are complaining about this. I chime in but I'm secretly (or not to secretly now) excited for boots and sweaters.

Fall is my most favorite time of the year clothing-wise. Cute, comfy but still stylish.

Soooo stay-tuned this season for what I've been wearing AND how I've managed (or not) to make my fall outfit inspirations 1, 2 and 3 come to life

But until all that happens... I'm hoping to at least snap a few shots of what I've been wearing each week (unless it's track pants because I still have those days)

Here's a few from this past week:

Linkin' up with some lovely ladies again: Get Your Pretty On, Because Shanna Said So, The Pleated Poppy

Soooo I'm super curious what your favorite fall fashion pieces are???? Any good finds lately? This little mom needs to get her fall shop on!

baby and toddler safety 101 (for the realist)

Monday, September 15, 2014

Having an almost 17 month old pretty much means I am required to have eyes in the back of my head. Mini-me is wild, energetic, curious and somewhat mischievous. It's hard to get much done when she's running around.

As a thoughtful shower gift I received a couple 'safety kits'. I remember thinking "these will come in handy". I'm quickly learning that it sometimes seems like no matter how many precautions you have in place, your little one can ALWAYS find something to get in trouble with.

Another tricky factor: toddlers are uber clumsy. They really are like little mini drunkards teetering and tumbling all over the place. The whole 'learning to walk' thing takes some time and there are many falls. MANY falls along the way. Then there's the whole "I want to climb on, up, over and down every and ANY thing". Their curious minds and new mobility skills can be a recipe for disaster.

blackeye care of our coffee table

Oh boy.

The majority of the 'safety supplies' haven't been used in our house. I rely primarily on heavy supervision and trying to teach her right from wrong. I don't leave mini-me unsupervised for any length of time. That's not to say I don't cook, BBQ, go to the bathroom etc. But I usually know where she is and what she is doing and she's close enough that I can see her or hear what she's doing. NOTE: I have ONE child, so supervision isn't too much of a challenge. I highly suspect that if there's a baby # 2, I'll never know what he or she is doing (just kidding... kind of).

While I think supervision is so important, there are also a few tips that are helpful (and necessary) so that you can rest a little easier while your little one is roaming the house and you do things like cook dinner, use the washroom, surf facebook  and other important house-stuff:
  • if it's heavy, climbable and could fall, it needs to be bolted to the wall. I'm not even being funny. If you think that bookshelf has a chance of falling over on your little one, just bolt it to the wall. You and/or your partner will have fun using the drill anyways.
  • if it's poisonous and you wouldn't eat it, they will so put it away. I'm talking dishwasher tablets, laundry detergent, pool/hot tub chemicals etc. Little people are extraordinarily fast and sneaky, if it shouldn't be in their mouth they will find a way to put it there. Better safe than sorry.
  • baby gates. If you can't have your eyes on your baby/toddler (spoiler alert: you CAN'T) than you better have some properly installed baby gates. I have no idea why, but little people, particularly the ones unable to use the stairs, are drawn to the stairs. As soon as that gate is left open, she's on her way up.
  • plug covers. Seriously, if you have little people you NEED these. Since a very young age, mini-me has been intent on sticking anything she can into outlets. Mainly her fingers but anything will do. She recently got her hands on a pair of headphones (which Mr. B thought would make a good toy - go dad!) and I totally busted her trying to plug the metal part into the outlet. Thank the sweet lord there was covers on the outlet or mini-me might have got quite the shock. Literally.
  • teach your children how to treat pets. Mini-me was taught very early on to be gentle with our dog. He is a sweet, loving and kind dog, but she also knows not to hit him, pull his hair or climb all over him. Animals are animals, they have instincts, so we need to teach our little ones how to treat them, just like we treat them how to treat other people, with kindness. Also, as kind and sweet as our dog is, I always make sure to watch extra careful when mini-me is around him because it only takes a second.

I'm also quickly learning that some things, while gross, aren't necessarily a safety concern.

Things I'm less concerned about these days:
dog food - it's going to happen, as long as she doesn't eat the whole bowl, we're good.
dog hair - we have a Golden Retriever, it's pretty much a given but holy heck it's everywhere. EVERY. WHERE. She's covered in it most of the time regardless of how much I vacuum and it's inevitable that she's consumed a ton of it.
dirt - she walks in sand all day and sucks on her toes on our drive home. Really?! I can't control that nor do I have the energy. She actually finds it rather humorous when I express my distaste with an "ewwww don't eat your dirty toes".

Things that you don't even consider will happen. Like the time mini-me dropped one of my weights on her foot (ouch). Or the time I zipped her neck up in a vest (ya, that happened). Stuff will happen, hopefully minor, and you'll feel bad (or like the zipper example, like the worst mom ever) but it happens. It happens to everyone.

Here's the deal: accidents happen. Be prepared as possible, use common sense but keep in mind sh!t is going to happen. Heads are going to run into the coffee table, knees and elbows will get scraped and fingers will get shut in cupboards.

I refuse to be a 'hover'er'. There's being preventative, safe and using common-sense and then there's being overprotective. You can't put padding around your entire house and to some extent these little people need the freedom to explore and learn about the world.

September is National Baby Safety Month so this linkup is a timely one! Check out other safety posts below (and linkup your own). Make sure you visit TrueAgape for your chance to win a $25 Amazon gift card and some other safety stuff!
